Grocery Stores and Thunderdome - In Riverside There's Not Much Difference

Riverside, CA

Denaya Marie Shanks, 19, and Michael Edward Benge, 24, were shot and killed outside a Stater Brothers grocery store. Multiple gunshot wounds. Ms Shanks was dead on scene and Mr. Benge kicked later that afternoon at the hospital.

Regular readers here should know by now that I hold Riverside with the same contempt I have for colonoscopies, prostate exams and the French.

Not that there aren't cool people there. But, as the saying goes, friends don't let friends live in Riverside. Move out for god's sake. Sure the violence is just as bad out here, but there's less dirt.

First of if you are going to post something like this get the story straight. They weren't outside of the store, hell they weren't even in the parking lot. There weren't multiple gunshot wounds. They were both shot once. It didn't happen in the day it happened at night. And Mr. Benge didn't kick his family had to make the decision to take him off of life support. What gives you the right to talk about people you don't even know in such a rude way. Have some consideration about the family and friends. And has for living in Riverside and how bad it is... everyone thinks where they live is soo great or better than one place... but guess what... every town has problems..... and think twice before posting a story you don't have the facts straight on...

As of June 8, 2007 it will have been 6 months since the deaths of mike and denaya whom by the way brother & sister. Both shot in head, on way home from store 3 houses down. No other wounds. Denaya died at scene and mike was taken off life support. Unfortunatly the family will have to deal with this tragedy each and everyday.
I am not sure how you recieved information of incident; but please think twice before posting derogatory remarks of human beings you do not know.

I'm truly sorry for your loss.

I'm not quite sure, however, what I said about Denaya and Michael that was derogatory. They were the victims of a horrible tragedy, and I'm sorry that you see an attack on them here where none was intended.

I told of what happened to them based on a news story, which I linked to in the post (here's the link, by the way,, without judgment on them, their lives, or the tragic circumstances of their deaths.

I did say derogatory things about Riverside. I don't like the place. Never have. I think that's my prerogative.

But as to Denaya and Michael? No, nothing I wrote here was ill meant or derogatory.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss, and I truly hope the people responsible are brought to justice and pay for their crimes.

Exactly they were victims of a horrible accident. But the way you described Michael as kicking was just plan rude... you could have chosen another word such has passed. Think of how you would feel if someone dear to you died like them and heard someone say yeah he kicked the next day. doesn't that just sound rude and degrating like you have no remorse for them or the people who love them. Sure you may not know them but you have to have some remorse for the way they went. I understand you may not like riverside and thats fine you are entitled to your opinion but please think twice next time when refering to how someone died. For your information, they police have 3 supsects in custody for this. My cousins both had big dreams and now they are in heaven watching over us. We love them and miss them. So next time please think.

I don't know why Denaya was involved in this attack. As far as Im concerned she is truly a victim of a horrible crime. Michael (who has a nickname, is it Chip?) has been rumored to have tortured people with fire, beaten them and left them to die in freezers, caused them to become mentally unstable. He has also been rumored to be involved with robberies, and drugs. And thats all I have to say about that. I hope to GOd that the three guys who have been in custody for almost 2 years now awaiting trail for this, are actually guilty and are proven to be so without any reasonable doubt. If they are not found guilty, I pray that the right people are convicted, and that other guys are able to move on from this, and learn how to get along with their lives away from all the BS in that neighborhood.

I am a mother of a friend of Mike and Denaya, and my heart goes out to their family, and to everyone else who was terrorized in that neighborhood by the thugs who murdered them to shut people up after the crime took place. Some people it appears didn't shut up, good for them! Sadly, there are five victims here, the two kids who were murdered whose lives are gone, and the three who killed them whose lives are also gone by the violent and ignorant gangster lifestyle they probably grew up in. The good people of Riverside, and there are many, need to rid themselves of the bad people of Riverside. Know what your children are doing and who they're doing it with, and care about what values you teach them, that's a start.
