Boyfriends, Dead Nurses And Trashcans, Oh My

Arcadia, CA

Liya "Jessie" Lu, 31, of San Gabriel went missing last month. Seems she went to visit her boyfriend, Isaac J. Campbell, 32, the one whose apartment she was in the middle of moving out of, and never came back. Her body was found last Saturday stuffed in a trash can in somebody's backyard.

Lu, a Chinese native who moved to the United States 9 years ago, was a nursing student at Pasadena City College, where she met Campbell.

Campbell is wanted "for questioning" by the police. Probably should bring a toothbrush. He'll be staying a while.

Looks like he knows this, too. According to the story, he's already gotten himself a lawyer. Now it's just a matter of time before he either talks to the cops, or bolts and tries to run to Mexico.

I'm hoping for Mexico. We haven't had a good slow speed chase down the 5 since OJ tried it years ago. Nothin' like a flight from justice to bring out the news choppers.

Wow--they did this up big in the Pasadena Star-News. It had a large head shot of Campbell along with a big neon WANTED and multiple photos of the victim. In fact, the photos looked so different that I thought he was a serial killer targeting Asian women. So, yup, I put my two quarters in. I could have just read in all on L.A. Noir for free.

Anonymous said...

Naomi,
Thanks for the two quarters. We thought that bringing the one mugshot out more clearly would emphasize it was the same girl.
Apparently we thought wrong.

And so, Qs remains? Who's house was this and how did the trash can get in that yard? How long was the trash can there? Did it belong to the house or was it brought in? This chick must've been pretty cooked by now in the trash can? Was it a few months ago she went missing? What was that dude arrested for some days ago? Wow! Some other chick was found at Legg Lake I think last year in a trash can? Asian too from what I recall. How did this dude learn Mandarin or whatever Chinese dialect he spoke (Star news said so). Story says his mom is from the area but was called in another state? Dude, get some answers for us out here quick!

Well, Anonymous, the coroner currently has a security hold on the body so a lot of details, like time and manner of death, aren't forthcoming. They're not going to release the hold until the police feel they have a strong suspect at the very least. So far Campbell is looking like he's it, but since they haven't had an opportunity to question him, yet, they're not going to show their hand.

As to your other questions, facts are expensive, but conjecture's cheap. We know that she disappeared about a month ago. The neighborhood runs between the half to one and a half million dollars, so it's not low brow by any means. Two houses were recently sold, and one's listed right now. It's possible that one of them was vacant. If so, one of those could be the house.

Of course, that begs the question, when was she dumped and did anyone notice a vehicle in the neighborhood that shouldn't have been there? I'm sure the cops are working that angle.

If the house was a vacancy, she could have been there for quite some time. If not, I doubt she was there for more than a few days. Either long enough to get ripe, or long enough that somebody noticed when they went to put the cans on the curb.

As to the Legg Lake murder police are stating that there's no connection.

And that's all I got. If I find out more I'll definitely post it.

Anonymous said...

She was in a 55 gallon drum in a trash bag, covered in cat litter type material and the lid to the drum was taped shut. The owner of the house was a friend of Campbell and had let him store some of his stuff there for a long time. The owner of the house finally decided to snoop around Campbells belongings after many people told him they thought Campbell was guilty. This is when he discovered the body in the drum.

Anonymous said...

Why isn't this story on the regular news? There was just a brief blurb Weds. eve. Aren't they still looking for this guy? His face should be all over the place! The victim was not a nursing student.....Campbell was.
That is a story in itself,no?

Stephen Blackmoore said...

Thanks for the update on the can and the body. Interesting. Not looking good for Mr. Campbell. Of course, it never did.

And I've been wondering the same thing about why this doesn't seem to have gotten more airplay.

We've had a few heinous murders in the last year or so that seem to have dropped off the media radar, and I've always wondered why. Mostly, I think, because there aren't necessarily any updates (David Del Toro comes to mind).

Also, thank you for the correction. I hadn't realized that he was the nursing student.

And yes, that's a story in and of itself.

Wondering said...

Well, anonymous, it's interesting that you seem to know that it was a 55 gal drum, trash bag, and kitty litter, at a friends house. Since this is the first time that has come out, how is it that you know? Why didn't the reporters get the same info, it's jucier than "put in a trash can"...

Frank Girardot said...

WE've posted a story at SGVN that says the DA has filed charges against campbell as of Thursday morning. I too am interested inthe lack of coverage of this case. Al lI can tell you is that I will continue to cover it until it is resolved in some fashion.
As for the descriptive infornation about the crime scene, true or not there needs to be attribution before it can run as a news item.

Does anyone know where I can see that picture of Campbell? I think I might know this person. If its the same person, my wife would have taught him some Chinese a while ago. Scary. Very scary.

Frank Girardot said...

Anon,
I'll post up a photo on my blog
http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvcrime
let us know after she sees it.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for posting the picture. That is him. I'm completely floored. Granted I didn't know him that well, he still did not seem the type. He was always very friendly when I met him. Someone whom I spoke with and has met his girlfriend even said he seemed to be very nice to his girlfriend. So much for a public persona.

I'll try to avoid saying too much while he is on the loose. But some basic details quite a few people would know about him. He was studying to be a nurse, and worked part-time as a personal trainer. He was really into fitness. The topic of his speaking Mandarin was mentioned. He had studied some Chinese, I think he took classes at PCC, and had even been to China once.

It's all really too bad for Liya and her family back in China.

WOW! Dudes, you posters know your shit! 55 gl drum, kitty litter.. Friend of the killer... Storing shit in the house for him.... You guys work like regulasr Sherlocks! Wish the same could be said of those reporters at the Star News... You guys gave me more in this few minutes of reading then the paper has for the last month or so.... Now, no cheap shot but isn't the local daily paper's circulation down too and not just my LATIMES?? (Mr. editor, your turn)

Stephen Blackmoore said...

Thanks for all the comments on this one, folks. I think this is definitely going to be a case to watch over the next few months.

Frank Girardot said...

Maybe I did take a cheap shot at the Times, but I really do wonder why this hasn't been covered in greater detail beyond the Star-News and Tribune.
As for the unreported details...I'll try to let you inside my head. How do you know that what this anonymous poster put up here about the 55-gallon drum is absolutely true?
I don't know that. Regardless of what you think of the Star-News or me for that matter, I'd like to think that when I write something (or one of my reporters for that matter) it's a fact.
That assures you are getting the truth as we know it when the paper goes into print.
Let's take it a step further, do you think the newspaper would be any more trustworthy (or more worth reading) if we printed every anonymous comment on every blog that deals with some aspect of local news that we cover?
I'm not discounting what is written here. My business is presenting the facts that can be attributed to an identifiable person.

Okay, we want truth in the stories papers print, but now that you have some info to go on, why not approach your pals at the PD and confront them with it... they have to come clean for you, don't they... can't one of then talk to you without revealing their name like others papers do all the time... sometime, i read "from an undesclosed source" or something like that... We need sherlock on this case cause this dude if he did it needs to be exposed so that everyone can help find him and bring justice to this girl and her parents...now that car that's missing, why isnt there an apb on that one?

Frank Girardot said...

maybe the car's not missing

Anonymous said...

I was shocked when I found out that he was a suspect for killing this girl. I'm enrolled into a class at PCC, and he was the assigned tutor and teacher's assistant for the class. He introduced himself to us last week and was very helpful as we were preparing for the upcoming midterm.

Everybody in class didn't hear about the story until the day that the Pasadena newspaper published the news. From what I heard, he was supposed to show up to our class this past Monday, but he didn't show up.

Anonymous said...

I know the girl. She was very sweet, laid back, softspoken, polite and quite. She does not deserve this. No one deserve this. Her parents has never been to US before and the first trip they get here is to their daughters funeral. That suck. I heard the boyfriend has already hired a "super lawyer". I hope there will be some kind of justice for her. I understand people in this county gets as much justice as they can buy, like O.J. Poor Jessie, how much justice she and her parents gonna get?

Anonymous said...

Well this is to clarify the statements that the anon wrote about her body being found in a 55 gal trash can, with kitty litter on top of it. This is true, because my uncle works with the man who discovered the body. The trash can wasn't found in a backyard though it had been in the guy's garage. The guy had been friends with Isaac and had seen on the news where his girlfriend had been reported missing, so he mentioned this to my uncle and told how his friend Isaac asked to leave some personal belongings in his garage and how it was strange that he had been trying to get ahold of Isaac but he never answered his phone since leaving his belongings in the garage. My uncle told him he should look in the trash can cause her body was probably in it! The guy started thinking about it and in the middle of the night he decided he probably should look. Then he removed the tape on the lid and saw some of her belongings on the very top so he looked under them and saw the kitty litter(the kind with the blue deodorizing crystals), under the kitty litter was a black trash bag. He went to open the trash bag and the bag exploded from the gases in her body. He said the smell almost knocked him unconscience. He immediately called 911 and said send the police because there is a dead body in a trash can in my garage. I don;t know why the papers said the trash can was in a back yard when it was actually in the guy's garage. Her car was parked there too and the police had it towed when they completed the investigation there.

Anonymous said...

"Diferous Aroma" is the words used b a cop on KCAL9 right now (2 oclock newscast) to describe the odor coming from the trash can and the attempt to "mask" it with KITTY LITTER! Who knew Tidy Cat would come so handy for this murderous killer, who in fact has not been seen lately and they are looking fo rhim NOW!
You dudes posting stuff way back when they first found the body last week or so were so RIGHT ON! Why didn't the Star News pick up on that and like I said before, get those Sherlocks to get the cops to fess up on the grizzly details.. aren't we allowed to get details of cases "for the benefit of the public". Anyone know more stuff, POST IT and scoop the Times and Star News!

Anonymous said...

I think that dude cop meant Odiferous... Lates!

Stephen Blackmoore said...

Wow.

Wonderful comments, folks. And though I agree with Frank about corroborating an anonymous tip before publishing it in a paper, it's nice to see that the tip on the body's discovery was accurate.

This one has definitely generated a lot of interest. I'm assuming most of it local to the area.

It's unfortunate that this one hasn't gotten wider news coverage. If the police had released more details, maybe things would be different. Maybe they'd have him by now.

Hopefully, they'll nab him before too long.

I'm wondering about the rumor that he had secured counsel. If he has, I'm hoping the lawyer is advising that he turn himself in.

He's not doing himself any favors by staying out there.

Anonymous said...

YEah, I'm with you. This rat needs to come out of the hole he crawled into. Maybe he's in Mexico by now... sucking down some Margeritas with a senioreta somewhere in Cabo Saint Lukes. His mother probably knows where he is at and is shipping him money, RIGHT MAH! Give him up before he does the same to a South-a-da-borda Senior-eta!

Anonymous said...

He had a lawyer because he was busted for having a pound of weed 10 days before they found the body. His mother used her savings to bail him out on the drug charge and now she owes the bondsman 20 grand that she doesn't have. This guys ruined a lot of lives by doing what he "allegedly" did.

Anonymous said...

Can anyone tell me if the police found the crime scene? I thought it was in Combpell's pad. Did the police do any search there like collecting blood, DNA sample and finger print before his "wonderful" mother do her general cleaning. You know how it goes, the more evidence the cop has, the easier to convict that monster. If the dear mother helps out to clean out the evidence, he might walk away from murder. I just hope that one of us will run into that dude and send his ass to jial. Looks like we are digging out more stuff than the news and the cops. I hope that monster gets deported to hell forever.

Anonymous said...

You are right. I wonder if the mother knows about it before hand. Or if she had helped to put away the body. Talking about that mother of his, she has already started talking trash about the victim such as" he(jessie) is more materialistic than Issac". Like her son is a saint. Should someone gets kills just because she likes some nice stuff? As far as I know, she had two jobs and she had paid for all her stuff. Unlike Issac the low life. She was a free lance interpreter for immigration, she used to make about $300 per section (about 2 hours). She worked hard and Issac's mother shuld shut the F up.

To all you know-it-alls, backyard detectives, and those that contributed there professionalism and think they had the gossip on Isaac.

First I'll let you in on something... I knew Liya quite well... very well as well Isaac ( the accused). Unfortunately the way this ended up was somewhat foretelling in the way that I had witnessed the jealousy building at times for Isaac's perspective. Never in my wildest imagination did think he would commit such a abominable, heinous act.. but it looks like he did. It DAMNING

I grew up with the guy...

Anyway to cut to the chase straight from the wire... Isaac Campbell was just captured today Sept 27 2007 i believe a couple hours ago It;s 14:34 PCT.

I'm sickened and relieved. Some called her Jessie.. I knew her as Liya and I am really sicken by the whole matter and I'm glad this didn't become a circus regarding all manners of exploitive thinking.

Anonymous said...

and to the anonymous poster trash talking Isaac mother (commentner no. 28:

Speaking so matter a factly about Liya..

you have some of your virtuous rantings a bit off. Yes Lana did not like some things about Liya. But she felt she was wiping Isaac into shape. Even she's surprised about what has occurred.

Admitted that was a very dumb thing for her to say publically

you talk like you think you know everything Liya was doing with immigration. I can already tell you're a smart ass. you have no idea what goes on behind closed door. How many times did Liya ever come to you and confess her concerns about her options... that's why I know you don't know shit. as I said I guarantee I knew her better than can write about or imagine.

Liya did not deserver anything close to this NO ONE. Isaac was an utter fool. Now he's going to pay an utter ultimate price.

Anonymous said...

Liya was one of my best friends. I had many pictures of wonderful memories with her on my PC. I was at PCC computer lab 15 days ago when I saw Isaac Campbell using the computer next to me. I asked him about the dissapearance of Liya and he said he just didn't know much about that case. I never liked this guy. he always acted very creepy and weird. Liya told me she was always having problem with him. I am trying to contact the detective in charge to talk about it. The post above said Isaac Campbell has been captured. freaking @5s#0l3*($#*&#$ I hope gets a death sentece.

They got him back in the midwest, said the star news.. after a footchase... Mother EFFER!!! Home he FRIES if he did it, cant accuse someone until proven guilty, but if I had my farm, I'd put it all on he did it... Anyway, I wanna see him back here to see how he will try to defend himself, he'll probably claim he was drugged, drunk or just temporarily insane, just enough time to kill her, store the body & split! EFFER, his mother probably new where he was at... hope she doesn't get the original drug bail money back and that that money goes to her family to bury her...

Anyone up for starting a fund for this gal's burial expenses who did not deserve to go like this?

Mr. Blackmoore, 5:46 PM: In your third paragraph, I believe you meant to say "raises the question."

"Begging the question" describes a type of logical fallacy in which the conclusion of an argument is implicitly or explicitly assumed in one of the premises. In other words, the argument fails to prove anything because it takes for granted what it is supposed to prove.

No big deal - just trying to help.

Hello, all. I just want to set the picture straight. I knew Mr. Campbell for over ten years and It just strikes that this has happen. I've worked with him at Wild Oats in Pasadena and he was a hard worker and meant well.
Now 1st.
Issac sold weed, and anyone who knows him knew this. I scored a few times from him and I also worked out in the gmy with him. He is a nice guy. He is not weired or strange like some might post on this site, but he's very smart normal and smart.
2nd A few years back some people broke into his apartment with guns and tried to rob him. He fought them off (knowing boxing and ku fu)but hurt his hand from one of the people trying to rob him of his weed by biting his hand. Bulet holes were all over the apartment but none of them struck him. He jot lucky. He chased the three people off and the cops arrested him for possesion and sales. He stayed clean and out of trouble. He could have been robbed again and Jessie killed? Who knows well see.

Anonymous said...

Again, I also knew Jessie. I did some sponsering for her from people from China. She was a cute exciting person, she always had a smile and seemed very much in love with Issac. Every time I went to the apartment they seemed so much in love. They were always all over each other. Jessie and Issac went to dinner with me often and were and it seemed very in love. It has to be a twist to this, because it just doesn't make since. Why would Issac kill here and leave all the evidence in someones back yard where it could be found? Theres always the dessert or burned car senerio, but why leave it in a friends garage where it could be used against you WHEN IT FINNALLY IS FOUND. Sounds weired to me or maybe it's set up. I have so much to say but most of all I sad because both of these people were my friends.

Anonymous said...

SORRY FOR THE TYPO'S IM IN A HURRY

Anonymous said...

You bring up some good points there. I just cant see him doing something like that. It just seems strange, but then again everyone has their breaking point maybe he just reached his. Who knows until the news reports more information on her death and other evidence, were all guessing here.

Anonymous said...

If Isaac was so in love with Liya, why did he not show more concern about her disappearance?

Stephen Blackmoore said...

I'm wondering what he was doing in Minneapolis when (I'm assuming here) he knew the police were looking for him.

Anonymous said...

I knew him in high school when he lived in the garage of his mom's house. I met him right as he first got into lifting weights and fitness etc. I am completely shocked because he did not seem like anyone who would do this.
I learned guitar from him and still play some of the things he showed me. I lost contact when I went to college, but I always thought because he smoked so much pot, that he would not amount to much. Years later when I heard about him through someone I know, I found out he had completely turned his life around and was going to school, personal training etc, so I was really glad for him. I saw his myspace a while back, but it only had one picture of him, and then it was gone. I was TOTALLY shocked by this situation. It really seems like it is not the Isaac I met.

Glad to know Issac is caught. He will go through trial, tax payers will pay for his court time. Like in every murdeer case, his lawyer will TRASH the victim, like some poster her, alleging all kinds of trash on the victim, use your wild imagination. And then, many people will say "I cannot believe he did it, he is a nice guy...i worked with him...he is quite..." whatever, just like some idiots posted here, like just because they liked the guy, the guy is not a killer any more..... with all the fool's talk and lawyer's wildest imagination, he might walk away a free man. The dead is dead, she cannot talk back, defend herself, or tell us simply what happened. Her life was in the hand's of the A-hole killer; Now her justice is in the hands of many people, the lawyer, the jury, unfortunately, most of us are crazy and stupid.... like what you have seen on this blog.

Campbell isn't a nice guy. A better judge of character described him as generally condescending in tone when working with women. The most dangerous time for an abused girlfriend or wife is when she attempts to leave the relationship. In this case, Lu was attempting to move out/leave Campbell. Campbell preyed on an international who had only one relative nearby to aid her. When Lu attempted to leave an abusive relationship, he killed her and his family and friends enabled him (calling Lu "materialistic" when they were interviewed). To address a different thread of thought, PCC should have brought counselors with Mental Health Services to the nursing school to help these students deal with the stress of this terrible murder.

Anonymous said...

Minneapolis extradition trial to be held on Oct. 30th.

Anonymous said...

His mother only uses the word "materialistic" because his mother and father are (and were) hippies. Almost everyone is "materialistic" compared to them. I highly doubt that the rest of the family "enabled" him.

I knew these people personally. I was very surprised to hear that this happened. I'm still trying to figure out how Isaac killed his girlfriend. He was very good at martial arts. My guess is that he got upset that she was leaving him and beat her to death. Isaac wasn't a nice guy. He was a jealous competative a-hole and I saw it. People were just so impressed with his mandarin. Anyways, he gave his friend the trashcan and TOLD him not to look inside. How is that not enough evidence?? I'm glad I found this blog.

Anonymous said...

I was completely shocked by this. He was my former Anatomy tutor ... and well, let's just say ... speechless ...

Anonymous said...

I would like to think that I knew Isaac well. We used to train together and I used to consider him a good friend. Every time I saw him with Liya, they seemed in good relations, despite the fact that Isaac would tell me that he was trying to get out of the relationship. Then one day he told me that she was moving out, which came to a surprise because Liya apparantely gave him short notice and that it was her decision to move out. I could not believe what happened the following month, and would never expect Isaac to be capable of such a disgusting act. It is a shame because Liya was really nice and sweet, and despite what others have written about a supposed abusive relationship, what I saw was everything but that. Still, the evidence is quite damning, and I am interested in learning what the cause of Liya's death was. I don't know what would cause him to do such a thing. I do know that he wanted to end the relationship, and he told me that Liya did not. Maybe she found out he was selling weed, and threatened to go to the cops. I hope that Isaac gets what he deserves, because of this I have lost a friend and the acquientance of a very lovely girl. Very sad situation, when will people learn that killing is not the answer.

So whats the latest on killer boy? Last i heard he was supposed to have a extradition hearing on the 30'th. Now the Hennepin County Jail has him listed as having a hearing set for nov 30. I thought it was supposed to be a cake walk as far as getting his as back to cali.

Anonymous said...

It's not a cake walk when the law has 2 sides to it. It allows someone to defend themself inspite of a proponderence of evidence against them... "Due Process"

I'm sure suspect One (1) i.e. Isaac is trying to put together a feeble defense. That's the only reason a delay will occur. Keep this in mind.. the law has all the time in the world to wait out a piece of life sucking vulture... he doesn't... Time is his enemy

I wish that Liya's family knew how much i cared... and knew who I was. she only can hear my words in spirit now.

She dated a friend of mine for a while. She was a very sweet girl. I live in Oregon and one time traveled to Cali and visited my friend and went out together for dinner. How I wish she had decided to stay with my friend. She would be very happy and alive.
