Eat Your Young

Los Angeles, CA

When it looks like things are going badly, and your back's against the wall, it's time to set aside petty differences and look to your family for support. They're your rock in times like these. They're the ones who can see you through. Failing that, you could just sell them out.

Interesting defense tactic in the trial of Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt, who stand accused of taking out close to $3 million in insurance policies on homeless men then running them down with a Mercury Sable. Seems the defense attorney is suggesting that it wasn't Helen Golay at the wheel of the car, but her 44-year-old daughter, Kecia.

The theory goes like this. Kecia hates her mother, so she runs down the men, uses Helen's AAA card to get a tow truck for the now damaged car, and signs for it as Helen. But she uses a cell phone in her own name to call for the tow (let's ignore that Helen's phone is in Kecia's name). And, if that wasn't enough, Kecia is also a member of the same gym as the woman whose stolen ID was used to rent the car.  All this to get back at mom.

Points for style.  But.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Truc Do, the lead prosecutor in the case, questioned why, if Kecia hated her mother, she would help her collect millions of dollars by committing murder.
Why indeed? And the defense's answer?

Think they're gonna have to get back to us on that one.

Great, thanks. Now I can't even trust my MOM.

What, and you could before?

I could trust she'd beat my ass if I did something stupid....

And now that I think of it, there have been a rash of old people in her neighborhood dying. Nawww...couldn't be.

Hell, if she says I did it, I'll blame it on my 4-year-old.
